Bipartisan
Option??? By: Jared Woodfill Chairman, Harris County Republican
Party
The recent Houston Chronicle
editorial, "Bipartisan option, let's bypass politics in replacing
Bettencourt" was a rehash of the Board's endorsement of Diane
Trautman; an endorsement the people rejected in November when they
re-elected Republican Paul Bettencourt.
The article argues
that "this is a case where the runner-up has earned the title." The
board appears to argue that Ms. Trautman's primary qualification is
an election loss. What they fail to state is that Ms. Trautman
received the second lowest number of votes of any Democrat in this
election. The editorial mentions Ms. Trautman's efforts to lobby
Commissioners Court for the tax assessor-collector post, quoting her
as saying, "I would leave my political identity at the door."
Interestingly, during the general election Ms. Trautman received
nearly half of the money she raised in this election cycle from the
ultra partisan Annie's List, a political action committee that only
supports female Democratic candidates in the State of Texas. Ms.
Trautman regularly expressed these types of views during her
campaign, views the people rejected on November 4th.
Ms.
Trautman is anything but the "Bipartisan option."
Why
is it that when Democrats resign their recently elected positions
from November’s election to join President-elect Obama's
administration, it is greeted with great acclaim from the editorial
board, but when a Republican resigns their recently elected position
from November's election, they treat it with such disdain?
Monday night the Harris County Republican Party Executive Committee
passed a resolution crediting Paul Bettencourt for all he has done
at the Tax Office and wished him well in his new career because,
frankly, he deserves praise for all his hard work for the public
over the past ten years.
