It is important to note that human smuggling and human trafficking are two distinct crimes. For example, the definition of human smuggling is the importation and/or harboring of people into the United States involving deliberate evasion of immigration laws. Human trafficking however, is defined as the exploitation of persons for labor or services for the purpose of involuntary servitude, slavery, or forced commercial sex acts.
In Houston, we've witnessed first-hand on numerous occasions the deplorable conditions many of those smuggled into the country are forced to live in as a result of the law evading tactics utilized by smugglers to prevent detection.
