Judge Sylvia Matthews, 281st District CourtJudge Bonnie Hellums grew up in Houston as the oldest of five siblings. She graduated from Lamar High School, then Southern Methodist University with a BA, a Master’s degree from University of Illinois, a JD from South Texas College of Law and all but the thesis on a Master’s in Judicial Studies from the University of Nevada. In addition she has earned numerous licenses as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Advanced Addiction Counselor. Judge Hellums has taken this mental health expertise and combined it with her position as a judge for the last 15 years to start two separate therapeutic courts. One was the first (and only) Family Drug Court in Harris County. The other is the Infants and Toddlers Court which started October 2009. She has served on the Boards of the State Bar College, Delta Gamma Foundation, Theatre Under the Stars, American Leadership Forum, Comp-U-Dopt, Houston Works, Amicus Board of Commission on Judicial Conduct, Houston Taipei Society Sister City, 2nd Bombardment Group, Shifa Foundation, American World War II Orphans Network, and St Luke’s United Methodist Church. She has served as the chair of the Facilites Committee for Harris County, serves as a Commissioner of the Permanent Judicial Commission of Children, Youth and Families for the Supreme Court of Texas and is serving on the Advisory Board for the new certification for Counsels for children. Judge Hellums has made numerous lectures all of the USA and has served as a faculty for the National Judicial College and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges as well as being the chair of the Committee on Alcohol and Drugs for the NCJFCJ. She has been honored by being named “Woman on the Move” (Texas Executive Women), “Local Hero” (Houston Lawyer), Mission Accomplished Award (Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston), “Woman of Vision” (Delta Gamma), and Texas Leader Award (Leadership Houston), Mentor Recognition Award (Rice University), Community Partnership Award (Houston Area Marriage and Family Therapists), Lifetime Achievement Award (Texas Businesswoman of the Year), and Torchbearer Award (TCADA). Judge Hellums is married to Carel Stith , who played for the Houston Oilers and now is a lawyer, and between them they have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Judge Hellums, who is a lifelong Republican and a member of Magic Circle, is the proud mother of Capt. (Dr.) Josh Hellums who is the battalion surgeon for the 5th Battalion of Special Forces, serving in Iraq.
