"Yes, I’m running as a Socialist. I'm a far-left candidate."
Franklin Bynum is a Socialist candidate running under the Democrat banner for Harris County Criminal Court 8. He is a member of the Democrat Socialists of America - an organization that since November 2016, has seen its membership increase from about 5,000 to 35,000 nationwide. The number of local groups has grown from 40 to 181, including 10 in Texas. Houston’s once-dormant chapter now has nearly 300 members. The DSA's "constitution" begins with the foundational principle of Socialism: "We are socialists because we reject an economic order based on private profit."
As linked above, the New York Times reports that Bynum collected nearly all of the signatures required for his campaign outside the county jail, from defendants and their family members. He intends to staff a table outside the jail during the campaign, with the help of D.S.A. volunteers.
This November, the choice is clear - if Democrats vote straight-ticket, they will choose to seat a Socialist on a Harris County judicial bench. If Republicans fail to vote straight ticket, they could be helping Democrats elect a Socialist.
