Harris County GOP Statement On Congressman Kevin Brady's Retirement Announcement

HOUSTON, Texas – Harris County Republican Party Chairman Cindy Siegel released the following statement regarding Congressman Kevin Brady's announcement that he will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives following the remainder of his term in 2022:

"As the U.S. Representative for the 8th Congressional District since 1996, former member of the Texas House, and former head of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce for nearly two decades, Congressman Kevin Brady has dedicated a lifelong career to serving the people of southeast Texas.

"We are proud of Kevin's many accomplishments while representing the conservative values of his constituents in Washington, D.C. over the last 25 years. He rose to the leadership ranks not only as one of the most senior members of the Texas congressional delegation, but within the House Republican Conference, serving as the third Texan in history to Chair the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. During that time, he fulfilled his promise to the American people, working with lawmakers of both parties to lead the once-in-a-generation tax overhaul bill of 2017 through the House and Senate conference process to President Trump's desk. Kevin has made a difference in the lives of Harris County voters and all Americans, working to create economic prosperity, jobs, and a brighter future for younger generations.

"As we head into the 2022 election cycle, we look forward to working with the Republican nominee who will continue to support the pro-taxpayer, pro-business, and pro-family values of the voters in the 8th District. Kevin's positive outlook will surely be missed in Congress, but I am certain that he will continue to make an impact on the world, and we wish him, his family, and Team Brady all the best."

According to the Texas Tribune, "The population center of his district is Montgomery County, a potent Republican stronghold in the northern Houston suburban region. In its current form, the 8th District extends north into the Piney Woods. It will likely see some changes in this year’s round of redistricting.

"It is difficult, however, to see any scenario where this seat becomes competitive territory for Democrats. Brady never won reelection with less than 59% of the vote, and he frequently won in more recent cycles by 50-percentage-point margins. In 2020, then-President Donald Trump carried the 8th District by a 42-point margin over future President Joe Biden."
