HOUSTON, February 24, 2020 – Harris County Republican Party Chairman Paul Simpson today sent a letter to Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman warning against the suppression of free speech and the recent directive forbidding election workers to speak with media. The County Clerk conducts the primary election under contract with the Harris County Republican Party.
"Our Party vigorously defends the First Amendment rights of all citizens, including election workers in our primary election," the letter reads. "The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech vital to our free society."
"However, [the Harris County Clerk's] directive attempts to silence election workers from publicly reporting issues with your voting systems and seeks to prevent the media from accurately reporting on the election process and integrity," the letter continues.
The letter also instructs the County Clerk to retract its directive and let Republican primary election workers exercise their right to free speech. It also instructs the County Clerk to retain all documents relating to this election, including emails, texts, phone records, and communications relating to the 2020 Harris County Republican primary election.
