**Please Note** The Coronavirus (COVID-19) remains an ongoing threat, and our priorities are the health and safety of our community. We've been working with our Senate District Chairs in Harris County as well as the Republican Party of Texas to adapt our Conventions in light of the current health emergencies. Please follow HCRP communications via email, social media, and our website for updates.
Below you'll find information on how to get involved in the 2020 Harris County Republican Convention process. Party conventions are held every two years. There are four levels of conventions this year: Precinct, County/Senate District (SD), State (held in Houston this year), and National.
Attendees at each level pass resolutions and elect delegates to the next convention level. These resolutions and delegates help shape the party platform and its direction regarding public policy. To be a delegate, you must affiliate with the Republican Party (by voting in the Republican Primary or by taking an oath of affiliation). Once affiliated you cannot vote or participate in another party’s primary or convention process for the remainder of the voting year.
If you have any questions, call 713-838-7900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also visit www.texasgop.org/convention/ or download the delegate one-pager for more info from the State Party.
The Precinct Convention is the first step in the political convention process. The Harris County Republican Party Precinct Conventions previously occurred the the evening of Primary Election Day, Tuesday, March 3, 2020, after polls closed. Resolutions were adopted and delegates and alternates elected for the next convention level.
Senate District (SD) Conventions
The next step is the Senate District or SD Convention. Those individuals who were elected by their precinct can be delegates and alternates to their SD Convention. (Anyone may attend an SD convention as a guest.) Ordinarily, SD delegates set rules by which the convention will operate, vote on resolutions, and elect delegates and alternates to the Republican Party of Texas State Convention. Those who did not or were not able to become a precinct delegate to an SD Convention can still be a delegate to the State Convention, but must be nominated by their SD Convention to be a state delegate.
Pursuant to Republican Party of Texas Rules and the Texas Election Code, the SD Conventions were scheduled to convene at 9:00am on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at the locations noted below. However, due to the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) state of emergency and official guidelines released by the CDC, the SD conventions will proceed differently from how they were originally announced, as noted below for each respective SD. HCRP and the individual Senate District Chairs will provide updates in the coming days and weeks to the SD delegates and alternates. If you have immediate need for more detail, we encourage you to reach out directly to the respective Senate District Chair listed below.

This year, we are excited the State Convention will take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. Originally planned for May 2020, the COVID-19 state of emergency forced rescheduling of the convention to July 16 -18, 2020, but still taking place in Houston. The Republican Party of Texas will provide communications about hotel bookings and other logistical details about the State Convention.
The State convention is a place for people who vote in the Republican Primary election to define our shared beliefs and to determine how we will promote them. We do this by creating a platform and by setting rules and electing people to run the party between conventions. Anyone can attend who is a registered voter, who has affiliated with the Republican Party, either by voting in the Party Primary or by taking an oath of affiliation, and has been duly elected by the lower level conventions. Delegates to the State Convention create and ratify the Party rules and platform and cast ballots to elect the State Chairman, State Vice-Chairman, and State Republican Executive Committee members (two per Senate District). In 2020, a presidential election year, we will also elect delegates to attend the Republican National Convention scheduled for this summer.
